The U.S. EPA's National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory is in need of two CLARIOstar multi-mode microplate readers with fluorescence polarization and full spectra UV/VIS capabilities. The BMG CLARIOstar microplate reader is sold only by BMG Labtech Inc. The system provides the ability to measure fluorescence intensity, UV/vis absorbance, luminescence, time-resolved fluorescence, fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), fluorescence polarization, time-resolved FRET, and bioluminescence resonance energy transfer. This machine is the sole instrument on the market that contains a linear variable dichroic and linear variable excitation and emission monochromators. EPA experiments require the use of a variety of different cell lines with readouts across the spectrum. The BMG machine is the only machine that has the capacity to accommodate all of the EPA science readouts. Other machines have fixed filter arrays incapable of performing our desir ed analyses. Existing EPA files have all been created using BMG instrumentation and Matlab software. Future studies need to be performed on the same platform so that results can be compared to previous findings. Changing to a new analysis system would make it difficult if not impossible to compare new findings with past results and could jeopardize EPA scientists' access to older files.
