Noun Description: The Fire Extinguisher, National Stock Number (NSN) 4210-01-649-4880, is a component of the Automatic Fire Extinguishing System (AFES) used in the M109 Self-Propelled Howitzer. The AFES system is designed to detect and suppress fires or explosions within the vehicle, protecting personnel and equipment. The fire extinguisher contains the suppressant, which is automatically expelled when a fire is detected by the system’s sensors. This ensures rapid fire suppression and enhances operational safety for the turreted 155mm vehicle.
